Good vision is important for learning. If a child has an uncorrected vision problem, it can be harder for them to learn when they start school. Vision screening helps find potential issues early so they can be fixed.
Head Start programs are required to do evidence-based vision screening. If you find a possible vision issue during the screening, it’s important to make sure the child gets a referral to the care they need. Three new resources will help you learn more about vision screening and referrals, including:
· Tips for Head Start staff who conduct the screening
· Strategies to prepare families for their child’s screening
· Information about optotype-based screening, the most common type of vision screening for children ages 3 to 5
· Taking the right steps toward a referral to an eye specialist
